This little Japanese made unit is one of the most popular alternatives to a cable. Running from 2x AA batteries it just slides onto the Hot Shoe just like a flash gun. When you fire your camera it emits a pulse of infra-red light which is picked up by the slave cell on your flash head. Disadvantages: Can be swamped by sunlight if used outside, requires line of sight but normally works in most studios with reflective surfaces. Advantages: No cable and inexpensive to run! Beware of cheap and nasty Chinese copies!
