No 4 - Girls on Trampoline No 4 - Girls on Trampoline
Girls on trampoline

Skill level - Basic to intermediate

This fun shot was taken using minimal equipment and a basic but effective photographic technique called ‘Pre focusing’

I simply stood to one side whilst our energetic young models were bouncing up and down, and I referenced a point on the adjacent wall when their heads were at the highest point. I then asked them to stop bouncing and I got one model to hold her hand above her head at that level, I positioned myself above the trampoline by leaning out of a bedroom window, and focused on the models hand, knowing that her head would be at that level at the top of their bounce

By using the lens in manual, and simply timing the shots at the top of the bounce, the vast majority of shots were sharp, allowing me to concentrate on their expressions.

You may have a ‘predictive focus’ facility on your camera, and this may also enable sharp pictures. By predicting your subjects movement, the camera will focus the lens to where it predicts the subject will be, at the exact time of exposure

I positioned a large California Sun Bounce reflector (6ftx4ft) against the wall to reflect some ambient light (Day light) back onto our models to lift any shadows and lower the contrast

Shot on a Canon 1DS at 400 ISO, the exposure was set to F5.6 at 500th of a second to freeze their motion. The lens was a 2.8L 70-200 set to 100mm
