Life style shot for holiday complex
Skill level – Intermediate
This was part of a set of life style pictures taken for a holiday complex, very often the main concept of shots like this is to illustrate how someone feels in that environment, and your image should convey information about the surrounding ambiance
It was a bright day with harsh sunshine resulting in a very high contrast light and there was the potential of burnt out high lights and underexposed shadow areas. To overcome these problems and reduce the contrast range to a more agreeable level, we took our model out of the direct sun light and placed her under the shade of a large tree. The colour of the light (known as the colour temperature) in the shade, especially in the summer can be on the blue side. Together with reflectance from the surrounding green grass, and foliage, your subject could end up with an unpleasant, bluely green cast.
This is one of three reasons we used the Elinchrom portable light unit, the Ranger RX.
First of all, the colour of the flash is balanced to daylight and will remove any nasty casts. Secondly we could increase the amount of light on the model in shade, to balance with the higher light levels outside the shaded area. And thirdly, using the Ranger RX fitted with a soft box, we could control the quality of the light, and produce great studio style lighting, but outdoors, simple, but very effective
Shot on a Canon 1DS with a 28-70 28L lens set at 60mm. Exposure F11 at 250th of a second
Lighting, Elinchrom Ranger RX fitted with 1.3 Rotalux soft box
