We've been spoilt with a number Phase One announcements today. From the innovative new benchmark in medium format technology, the IQ3 100MP Trichromatic digital back, to the exciting (and free!) Feature Update # 4. In this blog we go through all the cool new additions, as well as last weeks Honeybee Autofocus Platform 2.0 (HAP-2) upgrade announcement. Without further ado....
Phase One IQ3 100MP Trichromatic - The Art of Expression. The Science of Colour.
With the release of the IQ3 100MP Trichromatic Digital Back, Phase One have once again confirmed their position as the leading developers of camera systems and software production. The IQ3 100MP Trichromatic Digital Back is a proprietary sensor which has been designed to achieve next level colour capability, taking a massive step forward towards mimicking the colour vision of the human eye.
Developed in conjunction with close partner Sony, this sensor is the culmination of technological advancements that take digital colour capabilities far beyond what has been possible before now. Rendering colour into “astonishing brilliance” is at the heart of the ethos behind the Trichromatic digital back. Using a new CMOS sensor and Bayer Filter colour technology, only Phase One can offer photographers 101-megapixels of creative possibility in never-before possible colour definition.
This pioneering sensor design has also established the lowest and therefore cleanest base ISO of any medium format CMOS sensor. At an impressive ISO 35, the results of the IQ3 100MP Trichromatic are crisp and clean, providing the absolute lowest digital noise for any CMOS system of its size.
At TFC we look forward to continuing our close partnership with Phase One, and will be happy to arrange a demonstration of all things Trichromatic. Get in contact with any of our branches for all the details, or to arrange a demo of this fantastic new digital black please fill in the form HERE and we'll be in contact.

The Fourth Feature Update for the XF Camera System – A Focus on Focus
The XF Camera System has expanded once again with Feature Update #4! This update develops the focus control and focus flexibility of the XF Camera System. One thing is for sure with the ongoing feature updates of the XF is that the scope for possibility in the future is huge. Here is a breakdown of what’s now possible with Feature Update 4. This is a free firmware update available to all XF users.
Focus and Recompose Mode
When shooting at wide apertures, the depth of field on the full frame 645 sensor can cause some uncertainties on whether critical sharpness is achieved. With this new development, the Honeybee Autofocus Platform is able to intelligently detect, predict and, with increasing precision, shift the focus plane to where you need it to be. We have seen the results that come into Capture One from a shoot using this mode, and there is near 100% accuracy.
Zoom to Focus
In connection with the new Autofocus and Recompose mode, Zoom to Focus allows photographers to confirm focus by providing a dynamic image preview option in the IQ Digital Back, automatically enlarging captured images to the point of focus.
Focus Trim Tool
This has been refined by Phase One, and now requires much less user-calibration than it did before. With the correct lighting conditions and shooting distance, the XF system is now able to automatically trim a Blue Ring lens and have that valued saved, and remembered for each lens, into the camera. It is possible to trim Silver Ring lenses using the tool as well, but there is not the same individual lens detection as with the Blue Ring range. Phase One have created their own Focus Target which streamlines this process.
Focus Stack Automation & Focus Nudge
The Focus Stack tool has taken an incredibly useful leap, in fact that the system now detects (through increasing technical awareness of the Schneider Kreuznach lenses) how many shots you need to take. Precision, accuracy and efficiency taken to the next level! With Focus Nudge, any dial on the XF can be assigned to precisely step lens focus to minute degrees. Used together with Live View, this new feature provides an incredible degree of precision for control.
Vibration Analysis & Infinite Vibration Delay
For now Vibration Analysis is just an analysis tool, similar to the Flash Analysis introduced with FU3, but it holds great potential for future tweaks to the system. Advancing the Vibration Delay tool, the XF now has the ability to wait for optimal conditions before releasing the shutter. Infinite Vibration Delay now allows the camera to continue waiting indefinitely for stable and vibration-free conditions.
Further Profoto integration
The in-built Air system now enables remote triggering of the XF from an Air Remote. You can trigger the camera on one channel, whilst also triggering your Profoto lighting from another channel.
How do I get my XF Camera System updated?
This update will be available from 3.30pm on 13th September 2017 as a free download from www.phaseone.com. Please get in touch with us here at TFC for any more information on updating your XF system. We will be happy to update your firmware in-store, and show you how to use the new features. For more info on the update download the Phase One press release HERE
Phase One Honeybee Autofocus Platform - HAP-2 Upgrade
The XF camera system has grown once again with last week’s announcement of the Honeybee Autofocus Platform 2.0 hardware upgrade from the HAP-1 to HAP-2 autofocus sensor. This very exciting Honeybee Autofocus upgrade opens up amazing possibilities in terms of future updates, including today’s Feature Update 4.
There have been three Feature Updates so far since the release of the XF, and it is in these updates that we see the Phase One platform growing. Through Feature Updates, XF users are now able to benefit from Time Lapse, HDR, Focus Stack, Hyperfocal Calibration, Focus Stack and Flash Analysis features, along with a whole host of other advancements through free firmware upgrades. This is the tip of the iceberg in terms of future possibilities. Though there is a cost (£645 + VAT), we fully encourage this HAP-2 upgrade, and this cost does also includes Tier 1 repairs to your body.
As well as providing a ready platform for future growth, the main improvements with the new HAP-2 hardware upgrade include refined autofocus in low-light conditions where sensitivity has been increased by 2.5 stops, and in low-contrast conditions where the dynamic range has also been improved by 1 stop.
If you purchased your XF body after August 1st, 2017, Phase One will upgrade any body purchased after August 1st free of charge.
If you are looking to upgrade to HAP-2, Phase One are not offering a service loan while your camera is away, but we at TFC will do our very best to reduce the time you are without your camera. Contact any of our team for more information or to book your upgrade!
